Father's Day History

Father's Day has a rich history that dates back more than a century. It originated in the United States in the early 20th century. Father's Day is often credited to Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman from Spokane, Washington.

The story goes that in 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a Mother's Day sermon and was struck by the idea of holding a similar day to honor fathers. Her own father, William Jackson Smart, raised her and her six siblings single-handedly after their mother's death. Dodd felt that fathers deserved as much recognition as mothers for their love, support and sacrifice.

Driven by this idea, Sonora Smart Dodd campaigned for a day to celebrate fathers, and she chose June 19, 1910, to honor her father's birthday. The first Father's Day celebration was held in Spokane, Washington with local churches, and it slowly gained attention.

However, it wasn't until 1972 that Father's Day was officially recognized as a national holiday in the United States. President Richard Nixon signed legislation establishing the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.

Good [morning/afternoon/evening] everyone,

Today, we gather to celebrate and honor the incredible fathers and father figures in our lives. It's a privilege to stand before you on this special occasion of Father's Day.

To all the fathers present here, and to those who may not be with us today but are remembered fondly, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude. Your unwavering love, guidance, and support have shaped our lives in profound ways.

Fatherhood is a journey marked by countless sacrifices, late nights, and moments of quiet strength. It's about being a provider, a mentor, a friend, and so much more. But above all, it's about love—unconditional love that knows no bounds.

Today, we take a moment to reflect on the lessons we've learned from our fathers—the values of integrity, perseverance, and compassion that they've instilled in us. Whether it's teaching us how to ride a bike, offering words of wisdom during challenging times, or simply being there to lend a listening ear, our fathers have been our pillars of strength.

But let us also recognize that fatherhood comes in many forms. It extends beyond biological ties to include stepfathers, adoptive fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and mentors—anyone who has played a paternal role in our lives. Their impact may be different, but their love and influence are equally profound.

As we celebrate Father's Day, let us not forget to express our appreciation to these remarkable individuals. Let's take the time to thank them for their selflessness, their sacrifices, and the countless ways they've enriched our lives.

To all the fathers out there, today is your day. May you feel cherished, appreciated, and loved beyond measure. And may we continue to honor and celebrate fatherhood not just today, but every day.

Happy Father's Day to all!

Thank you.
